Act fast

Know the warning signs

Use F.A.S.T. to spot a possible stroke. If you see any of these signs, call your local emergency number right away.

Face drooping

One side of the face may droop or feel numb.

Quick check: Ask them to smile. Does one side droop?

Arm weakness

One arm may feel weak or drift downward when raised.

Quick check: Ask them to raise both arms. Does one drift down?

Speech difficulty

Speech may be slurred, or they may struggle to speak or understand.

Quick check: Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech unclear?

Time to act

Stroke needs emergency care right away. Every minute matters.

Quick check: Note when symptoms started, then call your local emergency number now.

When to call

  • You notice even one F.A.S.T. sign.
  • Symptoms come on suddenly.
  • Symptoms get worse.
  • You are unsure — it is better to call than to wait.

What to tell the dispatcher

  • You think someone is having a stroke.
  • Which symptoms you see (face, arm, speech, or other changes).
  • When the symptoms started.
  • Where the person is right now.

What not to do

  • Do not wait to see if symptoms go away.
  • Do not drive the person yourself if you can avoid it — emergency transport is faster.
  • Do not give food, drink, or medicine unless emergency staff tell you to.
